There is no doubt that civil engineering is one of the most vital and ancient branches of engineering, playing a foundational role in human civilization since the dawn of history. The monumental projects mankind has accomplished throughout the ages—ranging from the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Wall of China to modern highways, railways, dams, skyscrapers, and nuclear power plants—would not have come to life without the ingenuity and expertise of civil engineers.

The Civil Engineering Department at Shoubra Faculty of Engineering is one of the most distinguished departments of the college. Established over 40 years ago, in 1982, the department boasts a prestigious faculty with master's and doctoral degrees from renowned universities across the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, and many other countries. Graduates of the Civil Engineering Department at Shoubra are widely recognized for their technical excellence in the job markets of Egypt and the Arab world, placing them among the top civil engineering graduates nationwide.

Specializations

The department offers two primary specializations:

  1. Structural Engineering

  2. General Civil Engineering

The first and second-year curricula are common to both specializations, with specialization beginning in the third year.

Structural Engineering Sub-disciplines:

  1. Reinforced Concrete Structures: Focuses on the study, design, and detailing of concrete structures.

  2. Steel Structures: Focuses on the study, design, and detailing of steel structures used in bridges, industrial buildings, and high-rise structures.

  3. Structural Analysis: Focuses on analyzing the structural behavior of special buildings, such as high-rise towers, under various load conditions.

  4. Properties and Testing of Materials: Focuses on studying and testing the properties of building materials, including concrete and steel.

General Civil Engineering Sub-disciplines:

  1. Geotechnical Engineering: Focuses on studying the engineering properties of soil, determining its bearing capacity, and addressing soil-related challenges.

  2. Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering: Focuses on studying water sources, modern irrigation methods, and designing irrigation projects.

  3. Sanitary Engineering: Focuses on the design and implementation of water supply and wastewater systems for urban and rural areas.

  4. Transportation and Traffic Engineering: Focuses on the design of road networks within and between cities and providing engineering solutions to traffic issues.

  5. Railway Engineering: Focuses on the design of railway networks and alternative solutions for safe and economical transportation systems.

  6. Construction Project Management: Focuses on designing project schedules and conducting economic feasibility studies for various engineering projects.

Students are allocated to specializations based on their preferences and interests. All specializations are in high demand in the job market.

Finally, I wish you all success and hope you will represent your department and college with excellence upon entering the workforce.

Best regards,
Prof. Dr. Anwar Badawy
Head of the Civil Engineering Department
