Department Head’s Message

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Salah Mahmoud
Head of the Geomatics Engineering Department

The Department of Geomatics Engineering is one of the oldest departments at the Faculty of Engineering, Shubra, established in 1963 under the name "Surveying Engineering Department," which was later renamed to the Geomatics Engineering Department. It is an integral part of Benha University. Geomatics Engineering is considered one of the most important engineering specialties that drives urban and civilizational development in any country. This discipline is involved in all stages of a project, starting from planning and studies, moving through implementation, and ending with delivery and operation.

From this standpoint, the Geomatics Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering, Shubra, offers an exceptional undergraduate program aimed at preparing qualified engineers capable of performing various engineering tasks and contributing to the planning and implementation of societal development needs.

The Geomatics Engineering program covers specialized fields such as land surveying, geodetic surveying, tunnel and mining surveying, photogrammetry, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and transportation engineering, including roads and railways, along with other civil engineering courses. The program is taught and researched by a distinguished faculty of experts who have graduated from world-renowned universities in the United States, Russia, England, Austria, the Czech Republic, Australia, and China.

The department has evolved to offer a range of master's and doctoral programs, currently including three main specializations: Geodesy, Aerial Surveying and Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems. In line with quality assurance requirements and keeping pace with scientific and cultural progress, the department has sent a group of young staff members, including teaching assistants, to top international academic institutions to create a new generation of well-equipped scholars with advanced teaching and research competencies. This continuous development has allowed the department to annually supply the civil society with hundreds of highly-qualified bachelor’s degree holders, as well as master’s and doctoral graduates in various Geomatics Engineering fields.

Our mission at the Department of Geomatics Engineering is to enhance the learning process for our students by equipping them with the necessary tools and engineering skills, integrating academic outputs with the needs of society and the labor market. Therefore, the department maintains constant communication with the labor market and major industrial entities to improve graduate competency and uphold the scientific foundations of the Geomatics Engineering profession.

One of the distinguishing features of the Department of Geomatics Engineering and its graduates is the assignment of leadership and senior administrative roles to engineers who are alumni of the department. This trend is not limited to the local level but extends regionally and globally, reflecting the significant role of Geomatics Engineering as a core science within engineering disciplines. It is also a testament to the excellence of the department's graduates and their ability to compete both regionally and globally.
