Prof. Dr. Mustafa El Sayed, the Egyptian Scientist and the Professor of Chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology

Prof. Dr. Mustafa El Sayed was graduated from the Faculty of Science - Ain Shams University in 1953 and then, he got a scholarship to study in America.

He was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1980. He was appointed as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Physical Chemistry for 24 years. He got the King Faisal International Prize in Sciences in 1990.He got several scientific academic prizes from the American sciences institutes. He got the fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also got the membership of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Third World Academy of Science.

The researches of Prof. Dr. Mustafa El Sayed focused on the use of nanotechnology in the field of medicine, especially cancer researches with cooperation of his son Dr. Aymen, the professor of Head and neck surgery at the Cancer Center in the University of California at San Francisco. They reached that the gold nanoparticles molecules can help in the discovery and destruction of cancer cells by heat.

It is expected that the invention of Prof. Dr. Mustafa El Sayed to treat cancer by gold nanoparticles will be applied within 7 years.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa El Sayed got the US National Medal of Science in 2007 for his contributions in the field of nanotechnology, his Humanitarian efforts in ideas exchange and his role in the development of future leadership in science.

He also got the Order of the Republic of the First Class - Egypt in January, 2009.
